The earliest form of literature or the Anglo-Saxon literature descends from the language spoken by the two Germanic tribes: the Angles and the Saxons after their settlement in England circa 450. The only surviving manuscript from this era is the Nowell Codex which is estimated to be written close to the year 1000. Besides Beowulf, there are many other Old English poems such as the Widsith, Genesis A, Genesis B, Exodus, The Wanderer, The Seafarer, Wife’s Lament, Husband’s Message, Christ and Satan, Daniel, Andreas, Guthlac, The Dream of the Rood, The Battle of Maldon.
